What is LAPP?

LAPP which is the abbriviation of Light Art Performance Photography, is a one shot long time bulb exposure Photography, performed additionally by the movement of light.

LAAP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera. Created between opening and closing of the shutter. The images are not at all photoshopped. And there lies the magic of LAPP.

LAPP is decended from light drawing and has been developed to its own art form. LAPP, as the evolution of light drawing, is complemented with additional elements in the form of light figures, colors and light forms to create such masterpiece's of general view.

LAPP-PRO is been maintained by creative light artist's JanLeonardo Wöllert and Jörg Miedza from Bremen, Germany. They have been maintaining the site for the more than 3-years. They have been uploading loads of there creative works there.

Requirements

For this tutorial we will be using three images from Stock Exchange. We have used Relay Runner by balessi, Flame 3 by br0 and Fire Flames by huibidos. We have used Photoshop CS3 for this tutorial.

Tutorial

To begin with, we open the image Relay Runner in photoshop. Duplicate the image (Cmd or Ctrl+J). Name it the way you like. Now select the background layer. Set the foreground color of this layer to black and background color to white for this layer. Then hit Alt+Del to change the layer to black.

Now selecting layer1 hit Ctrl+Shift+U to apply desaturate. Now invert the color by pressing Ctrl+I.

Duplicate the layer1. Then go to Filter>Stylize>Find Edges to apply find edges. Press Cmd Ctrl+I to invert the color. Change the blending mode to hard light. Now to give the hard light more contrast press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer1 and change its blend mode to screen.

Now drag the second image, Flame 3 into the document. Change its blend mode to Screen.

Press Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer2. Make layer2 invisible and then we will be working with the duplicate of the layer2. The idea is to use layer2 as a backup.

Now click on the layer2 copy to make it active. Then hit Cmd/Ctrl+T to use the Free Transform tool to rotate and resize the image.

Now to make this image completely adjust to the leg use the Warp tool Edit>Transform>Warp. Place the image as shown below.

Duplicate layer2 again to completely fill up cover up the leg poryion of the image.

Repeat this process as long as both the hands and legs are not filled up.

Now for the hair portion we will be using the image, Fire Flames. Cmd/Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer3. Now hide layer3 and we will be using the copy of the layer3. Adjust the size and rotate it using the Free Transform tool. Warp it to perfectly fit to the hair portion.

Now activate layer3 and bring this layer just above layer2 (let me remind you that layer2 is in hidden state). Apply Free Transform to resize and rotate the image so that the entire body is covered up with the texture. Apply a Gaussian Blur of radius 15px. This will help the image to blend with the layers below.

Now we will be adding a layer mask to layer3. Then using soft round Brush Tool of opacity 50%, we will mask till the fire outside the body just fades away. Set the brush size according to your need.

You might have noticed there are several white line going through the images. To remove it create a new layer just below layer3. Now paint it with black using soft round brush tool. The image is shown below.

Click on the top most layer in the layer panel. We will be adding two adjustment layer which ar Hue/Saturation and Brightness/Contrast respectively. The settings have been given below.

We will give some fire sparks into the image. To create the sparks we will be using Brush Tool. The procedure has been given below.

Don't forget to check on the Smoothing box.

Use the modified brush.Now create a new layer from above and just below the two adjustment layers. Use 50% gray from the swatches pallet.

Thus we have our final image.
